Letter to the Editor

School Board Dist 5 Candidate Wates States Qualifications

web posted October 7, 2010

Dear Editor
The purpose of this letter is to announce my candidacy for Edgefield County School Board District Five and ask for the support of our voters.  I have decided to run for this seat since I have grown increasingly concerned about our school district and the educational needs of our students.  I have no intention of publicly criticizing the current school board.  I thank them for their support of the Career Center and me personally during my years of service in the Edgefield County School District.

I believe that I am prepared and qualified to serve as one of your school board members. I attended Edgefield County public schools and graduated from Strom Thurmond High School in 1971. After completing my undergraduate and graduate degree at Clemson University, I taught one year in Barnwell, S.C.

The next year I was hired by the Edgefield School District. I taught for four years at Strom Thurmond High School prior to serving as the principal of Johnston Elementary School for four years.  I served as director of Strom Thurmond Career Center for twenty-five years.

During my career as a professional educator, I handled student discipline, supervised teachers, prepared budgets, dealt with public relations, and maintained a positive relationship with business and industry representatives.  I also had the privilege of helping students prepare to enter the workforce and/or continue their education at a technical college or four-year university.

If elected, I pledge to always cast my vote to meet the educational needs of the students of the Edgefield County School District. During my many years of working with our students, I developed a thorough understanding of our students and the needs of our community. I am very proud of the accomplishments the students made under my supervision. I would welcome the opportunity to serve as one of your school board members.

Carroll Wates
Candidate for School Board District 5
