Letter to the Editor

Questions towing practices and charges

Letter to the Editor

web posted October 13, 2005

Dear Editor,

What are fair and reasonable charges for tow truck services?

On October 6, 2005 my 16 year old son ran into the back end of his friend’s car. He was obviously at fault and our insurance was responsible for payment. Because of this and not knowing that the other person had allowed a towing company to be called; I had already called another towing service. When I arrived at the accident scene (near Pendarvis in Edgefield) and told the towing company that I did not need his services, he insisted that he receive payment of $125.00 right then or he would take the car. In addition, he was going to charge $20.00 each day he had the car. When asked about taking the car to the owner’s home on Murrah Road he added $85.00 to the initial cost.

After a great deal of time and arguing I had to pay him $90.00 just to leave the car where it was so that we could have it towed where we wanted for a much more reasonable amount of $65.00.

That this is highway robbery!
