Letter
to the Editor
Writer
offers contradictions to UDC President's claims
web
posted October 27, 2007
Dear Editor,
I am a lifetime member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Camp
No. 1532 in Edgefield, S.C. When I heard that the United Daughters of
the Confederacy (U.D.C.) had voted to have the Heritage Festival on the
grounds of Oakley Park, I couldn't sleep that night thinking what a
disgrace to have a festival on the sacred grounds of Oakley Park where
our forefathers fought to gain our independence from the yankees and
scalawags who had invaded our state after the war.
Oakley Park is the only Red Shirt Shrine in the world and the house is
a museum honoring General Martin Witherspoon Gary. The confederate
veterans meet at Oakley Park the first Thursday each month and consider
Oakley Park and grounds as hallowed grounds. The next thing I heard was
them taking our Confederate Battle Flag down and putting up the First
National as "no one would know what it was". The battle flag was then
taken down two months before the festival and stayed down 14 days after
the festival before it was put back up. The president told me they
"compromised" with the Heritage Festival group so no one would be
offended. What a shame as it has flown over Oakley Park since 1942.
I would like to remind the president that there were only 4 voting
members present when the festival was voted on and the vote was 2 to 1
as she was the moderator and could not vote. The 12 to 1 "vote" was an
opinion poll taken by telephone as you cannot vote by phone. Also, how
could she get a 12 to 1 "vote" when the U.D.C. had only seven active
members at that time? Mrs. President, you cannot vote by telephone!
Then to add to the insult, beer was sold on Friday night and the deed
stated "no alcoholic beverages are to be sold or consumed in the
buildings or on the grounds".
What a sad day this was for the people who love and respect Oakley Park
as many of us do.
