Writer says Massey has the “right kind of experience” for Senate
web
posted October 27, 2007
I would like to offer the following for
the voters of District 25 to consider. This is not an advertisement for
the Massey campaign but merely one voter relating a story which left a
positive impression upon me as to Shane Massey’s character and
objectivity.
My daughter is an active participant on the STHS mock trial team. The
team is made up of some really terrific kids, with active parents and a
dedicated teacher. The students study trial procedures and prepare an
actual legal case in which they compete with other schools. Shane and
his wife Blair, donate a large portion of their free time to mentor and
prepare the students for competition. The competitions are held on
Saturdays in the Spring, throughout the state; hosted by the South
Carolina Bar association, in actual courtrooms. It is fascinating to
watch.
This last spring I took time from work to watch my daughter compete up
in Greenville. What was to be an 6 hour competition turned into
something in the area of 8-10 hours. It was apparent to me that the
competition organizers either didn’t prepare or adhere to the published
schedule which resulted in my inability to stay and watch my daughter
compete.
Many of the organizers were practicing attorneys/judges. I thought it
was disrespectful to be so far off schedule, not only to the parents
who traveled up to Greenville, but more so to the advisors and
competing students. Later in the week, I spoke with the teacher/coach
who invited Shane to sit in on the meeting because he knew some of the
event organizers and may have had insight into the schedule delays.
Shane listened to my wife’s and my concerns in an engaging manner.
There was no ‘spin”, no condescending attitude, just a simple response
of you are absolutely right.” I told Shane that because I did not want
to be one of those dreaded “interfering parents”, I’m left to work
through the teacher and advisor [Shane] to express our concerns to the
event organizers. Just as Shane (if elected) will be expected to carry
constituent concerns to Columbia to seek redress and resolution.
Shane was good to his word. The subsequent competitions were conducted
in a far more professional manner with regards to time management and
respect for the attendees and participants. You can’t fake
perseverance, character, sincerity and “follow-thru” Shane has these
qualities ye observed them first hand.
These characteristics guarantee that an individual obtains the “right
kind of experience”, not just experience for experience’s sake. He’s a
good man with an optimistic perspective of our District.. ..I know
he’ll represent us well.
