County Recreation Director seeks help with Youth Basketball League
web
posted October 31, 2007
Dear Editor,
The County Recreation department over the past three years has offered
a basketball league for our youth. Within those three years we
have averaged around 80 kids per season but we have had a big problem
with parental or adult support for the program.
The last two seasons we had 10 teams participating in the league and
out of those 10 teams 8 of the teams were coached by 2 adults.
Two ladies coached 4 teams apiece just to make the league a
success. It was very tough on these two ladies and also very
unfair for the kids on the teams.
On game nights I was left to man the clock, concession stand and gate
all at the same time, which is virtually impossible. At times a coach
had to run the clock while coaching. Another big problem that we
have had over the past three seasons is that we had kids dropped off at
the gym and we had to call and find rides for them when we closed the
gym.
We are not a baby sitting service.
Since the last basketball season the Recreation Commission and I have
talked about the league and have come to a conclusion that if the
league is going to continue we are going to have to have some adults
help in the operation of the league. That means a board of directors
and coaches. We will also need help with concessions, clock operations
and other.
All of our other leagues in the county have a board of directors that
runs their particular league and sees that everything runs smoothly.
Our basketball league needs the same type of structure. If any one is
interested in working with the recreation department with the
basketball league please call Nick Wates at (803) 637-2621. If we do
not have any interest we will be forced to discontinue our basketball
league.
Thanks,
Nick Wates,
Edgefield County Recreation Director
