Whitfield seeks support in School Board Dist. 1 Run-Off Election
web posted November 8, 2010
My name is Roman Swain Whitfield and I solicit your support in the
upcoming run-off election for the Board of Trustees for Edgefield
County School District One. I was born in Greenwood County and lived in
Saluda until moving to Johnston in 2002.
I graduated from Saluda High School in 1991 and from Clemson University
in 1995 with a degree in Agricultural Mechanization and Business with a
Minor in Agronomy. I served as officers in two fraternities,
Alpha Gammo Rho and Alpha Zeta, an honor fraternity.
I am married to Julie King Whitfield, who is a registered nurse at
Lexington Medical Center. Our two sons, Weston, 10 years old, and
Noah, 8 years old attend Johnston Elementary School. I serve as coach
for my two sons' baseball teams. We are members of Cedar Creek
Church. I received the 2002 Distinguished Service Award in
Agriculture in Edgefield County; the 2004 South Carolina Young Farmer
State Agribusinessman of the Year and the 2008 South Carolina Certified
Crop Advisor of the Year. I also serve on the Piedmont Technical
College Advisory Board.
My father, William A. Whitfield, served as Agriculture Teacher for 17
years and as principal for 16 years at Saluda High School and my
mother, Carol W. Whitfield served in the District Office of Saluda
School District One for 20 years. I have therefore been
influenced by public education all my life.
I have been employed at Southern States, 96 Rosa Springs Road, Johnston
SC since 1995 and became manager in 2000. Southern States is an
agricultural cooperative which sells fertilizer, crop chemicals, seed,
feed, farm supply, animal health products and is a national corporate
sponsor for the FFA (Future Farmers of America). The home office is
located in Richmond, Virginia. I manage the largest store in our
nine-store district, which includes managing store inventory of
$1,500,000. Sales under my management increased from $1.9 million
to $7.8 million.
Not only is serving on the school board about educating students but it
is also about running a business. Having worked for years with
budgets, purchasing and selling, as well as supervising employees will
offer me the experience needed to serve on the Edgefield Board of
The main focus of my campaign is to promote the education of ALL
students in Edgefield School District One. I ask for your support as we
work together for the future of our children and our county.
