STH Band spotlighted for achievements

web posted November 9, 2006

Dear Editor,

As a parent, I want Edgefield County to know about the Strom Thurmond Marching Band.  On November 28, the band finished 9th at the State Band competition in Batesburg, S.C.  What does this mean? 1) There are only 8 bands in the state that are considered better than we are, although I disagree,I thought we were number one, bias band  dad.  2) The budget of the other bands far surpasses our tiny budget.  3) Our band parents have won the most enthusiastic award at 2 competitions twice.

These parents work in the concession stands, sew uniforms, clean uniforms, cook and feed the students before and after competitions, load, unload, and pull equipment with their own trucks,   they chaperone, bring hundreds of drinks and Debbie cakes, and do too many other things to mention.  I appreciate them very much.  The President of the Band Booster Club, David Tollison, has done a wonderful job this year as well as have the other officers.

Last but not least, our band directors, Mr. Clark, Mr. Hill, and Mr. Craig, have worked tirelessly with the students. Mrs. Bennett developed a wonderful routine for the flag girls.  They have to develop the show by picking out the music and coming up with a drill to go with it.  Both students and band directors start practice for long hours in the hot, humid summer. When school starts, they   practice after school until 6:00.  These directors are very special people. I appreciate all the hard work they do.  They do a wonderful job teaching the students that it takes hard work to be successful.
The season may be over, but the band will continue to back our football team and work to raise money for next year’s show.  They will also continue to exhibit their passion for excellence. Because of great directors, great kids, and great parents, our band is always in “first place”.

What a special person Dr. Keesley is!  She had to hustle to the game at Midland Valley on Saturday, but she still came to support our band.
