Outgoing School Board member: "Proud of this County and Proud of my
posted November 13, 2008
Dear Editor, Edgefield County School
District, the Board, the Administration, and residents,
I would like to take a few minutes and express a few thoughts in
reference to my tenure as an Edgefield County School Board Trustee.
These past four years have gone by very fast, during which we have
endured many challenges. Many of those were imposed on us by the state,
some were local challenges, and several others came from within our own
district. The common denominator of them all, however, is that all of
those challenges have been met by the same entity, this board, who has
always tried to do what is right and to make the best decisions for
this district. As we all know, those decisions don’t always make
everyone happy, but that is an impossible task for any entity to
During my tenure on this board and through all those challenges, it has
been my pleasure to serve the children and families of this great
district, the constituency of District 7, and to serve as a trustee of
this board alongside the other members. We have accomplished many
things, but it doesn’t happen easily. It takes hard work, dedication,
teamwork, and sacrifice to get things done. Though my time here has
come to an end, the challenges for this district still lie ahead.
Those challenges, simply stated, are to educate our children, to retain
good quality instruction and administration, and to graduate quality
contributing members of society, all while being fiscally responsible
and accountable to the taxpayers. This is a tall order, but I know that
this district will continue to progress, improve, and meet those
challenges head on for years to come.
To my fellow Trustees, I have thoroughly enjoyed serving along side
each of you, and I sincerely appreciate your hard work and dedication.
We have been able to work through some very tough and volatile
situations all while maintaining respect for each other and upholding
the dignity of this board, for that I thank you. You above all,
recognize that you are in a thankless position, but let me say thank
you for the time that you have taken out of your lives to serve in this
capacity, thank you for your dedication to this district, and I thank
your families for sacrificing their time with you so that you could
serve a cause greater than ourselves.
To the administration and the employees of this great district it has
been my pleasure to work with you, but mostly I want to say “thank
you”. Thank you for what you do everyday, thank you for undertaking the
noblest of duties....serving children. Thank you for your service to
the generations that will follow us, because what you do everyday makes
a difference in this world by touching the lives of our children. These
children and the many afterwards will not remember who sat in this seat
or the other seats of this board, but they will always remember you.
You will forever be remembered in the minds of the children you serve
every day. They will remember that gentle word, that kind gesture, the
listening ear, that additional help you gave them, or that ever present
life lesson that they learn from you. It is you that they will remember
and for that, again, I say thank you.
To the constituency of District 7, I sincerely appreciate the
confidence that you showed in me four years ago to represent you at the
district level and for allowing me to serve you in this capacity. I
have worked hard, learned fast, and supported all the schools,
students, and families of this district as needed.
I have a strong record of sound judgment, good decision making, and
fiscal responsibility, and am proud of the time that I have served. I
have supported all forms of education and the parent’s right to decide
for their family how to educate their child, whether it be in the
traditional public schools, home school, charter school, or private
school. All my decisions were made after careful deliberation,
research, and thorough analysis of the information, in an effort to
make the best decision possible for all the children and families of
Thank you for your support to myself and to my family. Again, I
sincerely appreciate your faith in me and for allowing me to serve you
these past four years.
To my successor, I wish you all the best, and nothing but success.
Congratulations on your successful campaign, I am always proud to see
people interested enough in their community and the education of their
children to get involved. I encourage you to work hard, learn fast, be
prepared, and ask questions. It is a steep learning curve, but I am
sure that you are up to the task.
Finally, to the Board, to the Administration, and to my successor all,
I wish you all continued success in all that you endeavor, and I hope
that this district continues to improve in every way. Work hard, expect
the best from each other, and instill the best in our children. If I
can help in any way, please let me know.
