Letter to the Editor

Parent expresses concern of ref's actions

web posted November 21, 2008
Dear Mr. Editor,
As a father of a 9-10 year old, I would like to make this comment. If two teams come together and play their hearts out and one team wins and the other team loses, it’s okay. That is what footballs all about.

The problem you face in the Edgefield County Recreation Football League is some (not all) referees feel like they have to interject their feelings into the game. When a child gets clipped in the back and knocked ~10 foot in front of a referee and nothing is done I have a problem.

Did the other player mean to do it, no but you make the call so others see that it’s not okay. This is just one of several calls that were over-looked this season. Last night's game could have been wonderful. Let two teams that really deserved to be there play football. I have nothing against the Falcons 9-10 year olds. They deserved to win.

As a father all I want is for my son to learn the game, play with all his heart. At the end of the game, win lose or draw he knows on that day he did everything he could to be successful. But when he walks of the field and he knows the referees didn’t do their jobs it is a different story.

The parents of the Merriwether Broncos did nothing wrong last night. No one used any foul language. No one cursed the referees. No one said anything bad about the Falcons team, coaches or parents. They only voiced their opinions to the one referee that knows he did wrong.

We love our kids; we were the smallest group of all the teams this year. Most had never played football before. Several played both ways up and down the field. We beat the Edgefield Bulldogs to get to last night's game and for that in my opinion our Merriwether Broncos are #1.
