Letter to the Editor

Senior thanks community for support

web posted November 30, 2006

Dear Editor,

I, As a senior on the Ridge Spring-Monetta Fighting Trojan football team, would like to applaud all of the “Ridge” community for supporting our football team.  No, the Trojans didn’t bring home the State Championship, but we did bring together a community for a common cause.  Friday, November 24, the entire community made the journey to Orangeburg, SC to see our team play for the Class A Division II State Championship.  When we as a team looked into the stands, we saw a multitude of people.  People that include yesteryears’ Trojans, mothers, fathers, preachers, teachers, and other community members.  All the people gathered to watch and cheer on our team.

This following didn’t just happen overnight.  The journey started last year when we were defeated in the second round of the playoffs at Ware Shoals.  We had an enormous crowd follow us to that game and support us in our play.  We lost the game, but knew that times were changing.   Then, this year we had large crowds at all of our games (the only exception being the Calhoun County game, which was played in the rain).  At every away game, our crowd’s numbers exceeded the home crowd’s fans.  The following of fans helped us stay focused, think, and execute.  I personally believe that the crowd enhanced our skills and helped us in times of need.

In the playoffs, crowd noise is always a key component of the game.  In our playoff games, our herd of Trojan fans helped lead us to victory.  The biggest instance of this was our second round win over Great Falls.  After Great Falls drove the entire field on our defense, we had to make a goaline stand to win the game.  We stopped them on first, second, and third down.  It was fourth down on the four-yard line with eleven seconds to go in the game.  Our field, Walter J. Davis Field, was packed to the brim with followers of the blue and gold.  With all the seats filled and everyone screaming to the top of their lungs, we stopped Great Falls on fourth down and goal to win the game, 12-8.

This season, we won eleven games, which broke the school’s previous season record.  Also, the Fighting Trojans were undefeated at home in the regular season and in the playoffs.  We had a great team, great chemistry, great coaches, and great players.  But, we also had great fans.  They were there from the beginning to the end and we as a team would like to thank the fans for supporting us.  No, we didn’t win the State Championship, but we did more than we’d ever done before and we would like to thank you for being there with us.  Hopefully, the support for our Trojan football team will stay at a high level for years to come.  Thank you for your support of the 2006 Ridge Spring-Monetta Fighting Trojans Football Team.  Go Trojans!
