Monthly Featured Dining
October, 2005 Little Mexico 502 Calhoun Street Johnston SC, 29832 803-275-5011 Dining Review Team Shortly after taking our seats the other table filled and patrons began to fill the small lobby area. Within two minutes our beverage order was taken and within four minutes a bountiful basket of chips and salsa were brought to the table as well as our beverages. The corn chips were warm and crispy which went well with the puréed salsa dip, which was tasty but thankfully they provided additional hot sauce to give it that extra bite you expect in Mexican Food. The menu is long with choices ranging from a simple taco to full dinners. Our team chose the number 2 combination dinner, which consisted of one taco, one enchilada, and one chalupa, and the other chose a burrito. The enchilada was delicious, but could have used a tad bit more sauce and cheese. The taco was packed full of standard ingredients but the softer shell was not expected, a crisper shell is more to this reviewers liking. The chalupa was good and the entire dinner was more than could be eaten at a sitting. The burrito was larger than expected and very satisfying, even more so when the salsa provided for chips was added to the mix. The tortilla wrapper was tender and had a certain pleasant twinge which enhanced the flavors of the beef, cheese, tomatoes and onion sauce. As we dined we conversed with several neighbors from around the county who also had wonderful things to say about the restaurant and food as the waiting area continued to fill. The total for the meal for two including beverages came to $20.03 not including gratuity. Overall it was a pleasant dinner and the staff was very attentive and friendly. Parking, not to the fault of the restaurant, was limited to Calhoun Street which was plentiful but difficult to back into traffic to exit parking. The location was clean and by the waiting crowd proved Little Mexico to be very popular among residents throughout the county as we saw friends from every part of the county during our dining visit. We would recommend Little Mexico for the true taste of Mexico. The claim of “authentic Mexican food,” is authentic.
