Ask Ma and Pa Edgefielddaily.com web posted September 26, 2005 Dear Ma and Pa, I have a neighbor who has about half a dozen dogs and these birds, they are not chickens but look sort of like chickens, and all day long all I hear is either the dogs or these strange birds. I’m trying to be neighborly and have asked him what he can do to keep them quiet and he told me they were animals and there is not much he can do. It’s driving me nuts. What can I do? Going nuts Ma says: There is a nuisance ordinance in Edgefield County, as well as most counties, for such problems. Speak with your local authorities who can either talk with the neighbor or enforce the ordinance legally. If you are concerned about keeping the peace with your neighbor, you can file the complaint anonymously. Pa says: Get a gallon pickle jar and go fishing. Catch enough fish to fill the jar. When you get the jar full put the lid on it. Set it outside where the sun can hit it. After about two or three days take it to your property line and … never mind, if you do it you can be arrested for something I’m sure. Other than that, start raising hawks or get a bunch of cats. They are both protected. That’s all I got to say about it. Dear Ma and Pa, I have a son in the six grade who has made all A’s until now. He’s bright and the teachers don’t understand why he is doing so poorly. His friends haven’t changed and his routine hasn’t either. He’s happy as ever and seems to have no problem. We’re lost and are considering counseling. Lost Ma says: Sixth grade is the beginning of a young man discovering who he is. Coming right out of elementary school and going into middle school can be quite overwhelming for a young man. The youngsters are given more independence at school, they now switch classes, have lockers, teachers are not as coddling, and rather than having play ground equipment at recess, they have girls to look at and talk about (a whole new interest). Love him a lot and let him know that you are there for any of his worries, because as trivial as we may think they are, in his world, his concerns are very important. If you feel that Counseling is necessary, there are many counselors out there who specialize in working with young teens or pre-teens. First, I would consider speaking with your school counselor. You need more information from the school (for one thing, the teachers should know why he is doing so poorly, is he not turning in homework?, not understanding the work?). Seek more answers from the school. Use these services that are available or the school counselor can recommend and outside professional counselor if you feel necessary, either way, all information should be kept confidential. Pa says: I don't buy the line the teachers have no clue.Take away the dang video games, phone, tv, cell phone, internet and all that other crap parents today seem to think is cool because they are trying to relive their own youth through their kids. You have a 12 or 13 year old boy who is starting to notice 12 and 13 year old and older girls and you wonder why he is distracted? It ain't no different with the girls my friend. Counseling, for being a normal kid? If you think it is going to get better over the next 5 years you are the one who needs counseling. If you have a daughter take all but one of the phones out of your house. Not a bad idea for the boy either. Welcome to parenthood. Gee wiz, take the kid fishing once and a while. If you don’t tighten the lease now the longer it runs the harder it is to pull it back in. That’s all I got to say about it.
