Local
racer airlifted from crash at Modoc Speedway
web
posted September 24, 2007
MODOC – A Johnston man was airlifted to
MCG after a violent crash at the Modoc Speedway Friday night. Jamie
Rushton, 33, of Johnston, was “bumped” and “hit the wall” which
resulted in his injuries. Witnesses said Mr. Rushton exited his car
after the crash and as emergency workers assessed his injuries they
called for a helicopter. Rushton was flown from the scene to the MCG
Trauma Unit in Augusta.
Mr. Rushton was treated at the Trauma Center and was found to have
suffered
two bruised lungs, an eye injury, and a concussion. He was later
released from MCG and is resting comfortably at home a family member
said late Sunday night.
Jason Rushton, a cousin, said Jamie will most likely take the rest of
this racing season off, “but he will be back.” Mr. Rushton has been
racing for many years at the Modoc Speedway and is one of many local
favorites. One race fan who asked not to be named said, “We’re all a
big family. When one of us is hurt we all hurt.”
That mindset was most evident when a Modoc Speedway fan suffered an
unexpected brain aneurism after the birth of their first child earlier
this month. A collection at the next race for the family resulted in
well over a thousand dollars being collected to aid the family.
Fortunately the young mother survived and she is well on her way to
recovery.
Mr. Rushton is expected to fully recover from his injuries and will be
back
behind the wheel in the near future.
