Crash stalls afternoon traffic in Merriwether
web
posted January 12, 2008
MERRIWETHER – A
crash just after 3 pm on
Martintown Road Friday afternoon stalled traffic for over two hours as
a wrecker crew worked to clear the roadway of a car that came off a
trailer being towed by a pickup truck. The car ended up atop a
guardrail and partially on the trailer.
The driver of the GMC Sierra1500 truck said he was traveling eastbound
on the 1800 block of Martintown Road when the trailer began to
“fishtail” and the straps used to secure the Mercury Comet to the
trailer broke. The truck then crossed the westbound lane and then back
to the eastbound lane striking the guardrail. After hitting the
guardrail the car became hung on the railing splintering the support
posts for about fifty yards and scattering car parts and debris along
the roadway.
The South Carolina
Highway Patrol investigated the crash and cited the driver for failing
to secure the load on the trailer. The
driver will also have to pay for the damage to the guardrail in the
crash. No estimate for the damages were available but were said to be
“very expensive”.
The roadway was cleared around 5:30 pm.
