MERRIWETHER – Two teens became the first fatalities in Edgefield County for 2006 shortly before 7:00 pm when a 15-year-old driver lost control of the 1995 Camaro he was driving on Big Oak Drive and slammed into two pine trees in the front yard of a home killing both occupants. The driver and a 19-yeaar-old passenger were killed instantly on impact.

Meriwether Firefighters and First Responders converged on the scene to find there was nothing they could do to save the lives of the two young men. Edgefield County Deputy Al Moore said he was the first to arrive and said the driver died as he began checking the victims in the car.

Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett arrived on the scene a short time later and police were consoling the father of the 15-year-old. Rescue workers had to wait until a wrecker could remove the car from the trees in order to remove the second victim.

Speed was said to be a factor in the crash and was estimated to be around 70 mph at the time of impact. One resident said the car has been racing up and down the street all day with another car. Another resident told police that she witnessed the car driving up and down the street at “90 mph.”

The identities of the teens are being withheld until notification of family members.

Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy Curtis Morris said, “these are the worst ones, when it’s kids involved.” The South Carolina Highway Patrol took over the scene and began the investigation into the cause of the crash. Firefighters and EMS personnel were still on the scene well after 8:30 pm
