Talking trash, crash blocks road for hours
web posted January 17, 2006
Mr. Bishop, in the orange shirt, waits for his truck to be towed
MERRIWETHER – An early morning collision blocked traffic on Currytown Road Tuesday morning when Danny Bishop, owner of Merriwether Sanitation, backed his trash truck out of his driveway and collided with a passing motorist around 7:00 am.

The driver of the Lincoln Continental, also a Merriwether resident who lives on Currytown Road, was transported to University Hospital for evaluation. He was treated and released before the accident scene could be cleared. South Carolina Highway Patrolman Berry said Mr. Bishop was charged in the collision. Mr. Bishop, who was backing into the roadway, insisted the other driver was at fault.

The clean up of the scene was exacerbated due to the trash truck being fully loaded with trash. The heavy-duty wrecker’s front tires would leave the ground by as much as two feet at times trying to tow the trash truck the quarter mile to a location Mr. Bishop keeps his trash trucks parked in the residential neighborhood. Mr. Bishop picks up garbage on Tuesday mornings in the Merriwether area. It is unclear why the truck was already fully loaded so early in the morning.

Officers on the scene said Mr. Bishop was fortunate SC DOT officials were busy in another county, due to several problems with the truck. Area residents passing the scene would stop and speak with Edgefield County Deputies directing traffic to comment that the truck in the accident did not have proper lights working on a regular basis. Due to the truck being hit in the rear SC Highway Patrol said they could not make a determination as to if the lights were working at the time of the crash.

Mr. Bishop appeared yesterday on local TV news complaining about the speeding on area roads and inaction of local law enforcement in stopping careless drivers as a result of the crash that took the lives of two North Augusta teens on Sunday we were told. Police had no problem citing the careless driver in this crash.

The roads were finally cleared at 10:00 am.
