Whatley Continues Streak At Charleston Chess Tournament
web posted January 24, 2012
MERRIWETHER – Seven years ago,
the
Charleston Chess Club organized the Patrick Hart Scholastic Chess
Tournament to honor a man who was a pillar of the South Carolina Chess
community. In addition to being an accomplished player, Mr. Hart
served in many capacities including, organizer, state treasurer,
contributor to chess periodicals, tournament director, and website
manager. Seven years ago, a young Tori Whatley of Merriwether (left)
showed up
at the inaugural event and gleefully left with a medal.
Over the next six years, she would accumulate one 3rd place trophy,
five 2nd place trophies, and a better understanding of who
Patrick Hart
was and what he meant to South Carolina chess. She also stands
alone as the only player who has participated in all seven
events. “She has been one of our most dedicated supporters”, said
Mr. David Causey, event organizer and treasurer for the S.C. Chess
Association and the Charleston Chess Club.
Chess dad and Merriwether Mavericks coach, David Whatley, was honored
to serve in his role as S.C. Scholastic Coordinator, being asked to
participate in the awards presentation.
Tori’s 2nd place performance Saturday gave her an idea of what she
needs to work on for the upcoming
S.C. Scholastic Chess Championships
that will be held in Columbia on February 25th. She has held five
state titles and is anticipating a strong field of opponents as she
sets her goal of being the top female finisher. From this
tournament, she has earned an invitation to represent our state three
times as the S.C. Female Scholastic champion at the Susan Polgar Girl’s
Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
Last year Tori learned, that as Polgar alumni, her invitation to the
Texas event is now permanent. Still, she wants to be the
legitimate champion, preferring to earn the title and subsequent
invitation.
