Two-hour "gas war" sees prices fall to $2.29 a gallon in Merriwether Friday afternoon

web posted January 26, 2008
MERRIWETHER – Merriwether residents began swarming to Sportsman’s Corner at the intersection of West Martintown Road and Woodlawn Road Friday afternoon as news spread of a “gas war” of sorts began and the store offered regular gas for $2.29 a gallon Friday afternoon. “It’s sort of a giving back to the community,” manager Kyle Kenrick said.

With the average gas price in the area hovering around $2.80 a gallon residents quickly spread the news and the parking lot began to fill with husband and wife teams filling up family vehicles. Some of those EdgefieldDaily.com spoke with said they were alerted to the special by phone calls from friends that thought the store made a mistake on the gas price.

But it was no mistake Mr. Kenrick said. When a nearby competitor lowered prices to $2.39 a gallon, Sportsman’s Corner responded with the $2.29 offer for about two hours. Prices returned to normal a little after 7 pm with an advertised price of $2.78 a gallon.

With an average fill up of those interviewed being 16.5 gallons, residents saw an average savings of $8.11 each. According to employees, the store sold an average of 50 gallons per minute during the two hour sale.
