It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a… UFO?

MERRIWETHER – A strange light was reported
in the skies around Merriwether this weekend. Several people saw a
suspicious light in the eastern sky at about 30° above the horizon
around 7 pm
Sunday. Though that sighting was just a single bright white light that
zigzagged around as it intensified and diminished in brightness, it was
nothing compared to what one Merriwether woman reported to the
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office on Monday morning.
Though no police reports were available Monday of the sighting, the
woman reported seeing bright lights in the area near Murrah Road around
2 am. According to the information obtained, the woman spotted the
object hovering in the sky about 75 feet in the air. At first the
lights were blue but then began changing to many differed colors.
There were no indications as to how large the object in the sky was.
This was the second sighting of the same object the woman told the
Sheriff’s Deputy, she saw the object the night before as well. The
sightings took place near the Murrah Forrest Road area.
Deputies will be patrolling the area in an effort to locate or identify
the object if it returns.
The only other report involving a lighted object hovering overhead was
in late
January of 2006 when a man called the Sheriff’s Office to report a
strange light in the sky just above the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church
on Highway 25 just north of Edgefield around 11:45 pm. Deputies arrived
on the scene a short time later but were unable to locate anything out
of the ordinary. In that case the man told dispatchers that he thought
the light was the moon until he got closer to it.
Other residents told EdgefieldDaily.com they have seen strange lights
across the county for years. One Trenton woman said she remembers
seeing a strange light hovering over a barn on the family property many
years ago. It appeared to be a white in color light that just hovered
near the barn and did not make any sound. She said she alerted her
mother, who was asleep at the time, and they both witnessed the light
continue to hover before finally rising up and quickly flying away.
