Rekindled fire destroys remaining structure
web
posted January 31, 2008
MERRIWETHER – A fire
at a home on Royal
Place Tuesday night brought Merriwether and County Line
Firefighters
back to the scene on Wednesday morning when flames returned just before
8 am. The Tuesday night fire left the unoccupied home, that had no
power connected, severely damaged when firefighters left the scene
after hours of watering down the remains largely left intact. When the
first units arrived Wednesday the flames were rolling out of the
remaining structure.
The flames reached not only into the roofline, which quickly spread the
breadth of the doublewide mobile home, but also underneath melting the
underground power lines. Even though there was no meter connected to
the home, once the protective casings of the power lines were exposed
the lines began to arc causing firefighters to summon South Carolina
electric and Gas to the scene.
While firefighters
continued to battle the growing fire aided by high winds, SCE&G
workers tried to isolate the lot so not to disrupt service to nearby
homes.
Fire crews remained on the scene until approximately noon Wednesday
extinguishing the remaining structure. The initial cause of the fire is
still under investigation. The home has been unoccupied for over ten
years and had only recently been purchased, a fire official said.
