Deputies, EMS Respond after Baby Found Unresponsive

web posted February 1, 2014

MERRIWETHER Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies, EMS and the Edgefield County Coroner's Office responded to a frantic call from a 22-year-old mother finding her 3-month old baby not breathing around 3 am Friday at the Ridge Road home. By the time emergency personnel could arrive, it was too late and the baby was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to an incident report released later in the morning, the Aiken woman was staying at her mother's house for a few days and the baby was "playing and laughing" just prior to being put in the bed. The report states the mother placed the baby in the same bed with her and had a pillow between them. The baby was placed on her right side, the report states.

The mother awoke around 3 am and discovered the baby was unresponsive and called 911. She reported the baby had a "rattle" in her chest and that she had made a doctor's appointment for this coming week.

An autopsy has been scheduled and no results were available at press time.

At this time there does not appear to be any foul play and the death is expected to be natural. The baby would have turned 4-months old on Tuesday.
