Woman Reports Getting Vulgar Calls Following Use of Free Credit Scoring Website

web posted February 7, 2014

MERRIWETHER A Mount Vintage woman called the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday to report that after logging into a free credit scoring website to check her credit score she began receiving a barrage of calls and vulgar messages from a man claiming to have her social security number. The deputy investigating the report was met with similar vulgar conversation with the man making the calls to the woman.

According to an incident report, the woman said she logged into CreditKarma.com on January 28 around 1 pm. She stated she typed in her social security number as requested and ever since then the calls and vulgar messages began and continued through the date of the report.

The woman provided the deputy with the phone number of the caller and the deputy made contact. According to the report, which quoted several things the man said, including a profane threat to the deputy saying if the deputy called him again he would, "f you up". Due to the vulgar language quoted by the deputy in the report we cannot publish its contents.

The woman was advised to change all her financial information and contact the Social Security Office. The report stated the case was closed and no further investigation would be done.

A check of the phone number provided in the report shows the number was in Florida, according to the 407 area code. Though the phone could be a cell phone used elsewhere after being bought in Florida.

Attempts to reach CreditKarma.com for comment was unsuccessful.
