Deputies arrest three teens after assault rifle discovered in wooded area, two escape

web posted February 8, 2008
Below: Beer, ammo, assault rifle, and other evidence collected
MERRIWETHER – Shortly after 6 pm a Moore Road resident called the Sheriff’s Office to report gunshots being fired on posted property on Big Branch Lane. When the man arrived on the scene he found five young adults exiting the woods and informed them they were trespassing and that deputies were on the way. Two of the young men became nervous when the man asked if the gun they were shooting was stolen. According to him one answered, “probably”, and then two of them took off running.

Deputies arrived on the scene moments later and attempts to locate the two men in the area were unsuccessful. The remaining young adults were identified and said they could not identify the two that ran from the scene. A short time later a deputy recovered a SKS 7.62 mm assault rifle hidden in the woods with the clip missing.

The three remaining young adults, all around 17-years old, said they had done nothing wrong and were not cooperating. The two young men and a young female were then placed into investigative custody as deputies continued to investigate the incident. It was then deputies found an open 12-pack of beer in the bed of the truck and other cans littering the posted property.

At that time the three were told they were under arrest for trespassing, minor in possession of alcohol, and littering. Suddenly the three began remembering the names of the two others that ran and gave that information to the deputies.

A search of the truck after the arrest found several boxes of ammunition and several spent shell casings which were taken into evidence along with a quantity of unidentified prescription pills.

Due to computer maintenance taking place at the time at the dispatch office deputies were unable to ascertain if the assault weapon was stolen.

The truck was towed from the scene and the three were transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking. Warrants will be issued for the arrest of the other two young men, who were later identified.

The names of the teens were not available at press time.
