Knocking out Cancer One Penny at a Time

web posted February 9, 2019

020919mmsMERRIWETHER - The Pennies for Patients campaign for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a foundation that seeks to raise money to help cure blood cancers and improve the lives of patients and their families. One way they raise money is through schools, where students and educators come together to help raise money for this worthy cause.

Merriwether Middle School students held Pennies for Patients Fundraiser for two weeks during the month of January. During this fundraiser, students and teachers at MMS raised $531.87! The school goal was $500.

The fundraiser was a competition between grade levels where they competed to see who could bring in the most money. The winner of the penny war was the seventh grade, with over $80 more than the sixth grade.

Seventh grader, Peyton Gregory, shared, I liked being able to help raise money for Pennies for Patients because I know a four year old who is dealing with leukemia. Peyton was among other students who helped contribute to this worthy cause.
