Mother, Two Children Transported from Saturday Crash
web posted February 11, 2013
MERRIWETHER – A family of four
narrowly
escaped serious injury Saturday when a driver of a pickup pulled out
from Woodlawn Road and nearly broadsided the family's Saturn Vue as it
traveled westbound on Martintown Road. The father, who was driving the
Saturn, said he saw the white truck at the stop sign, but thought he
wasn't going to pull out. "I just kept getting over and over as far as
I could to try to miss him," he said.
Though his best efforts certainly helped avoid what could have been a
tragic outcome, it was not enough to avoid the collision. The Chevrolet
Colorado pickup continued to cross the intersection and struck the
Saturn at the rear of the front driver's side quarter panel ripping a
large gash through both doors.
The collision, apparently witnessed by
a State Trooper, tore the front
bumper from the pickup bore both vehicles came to a stop. Edgefield
County EMS and Merriwether First Responders were called to the scene to
treat the injured family members.
The mother and the young son were both complaining of pain either from
the hip or leg and knee area. For safety reasons, the mother was
immobilized and placed on a stretcher. The two children, estimated ages
of around 7 and 9 years of age, were also transported to be checked.
Neither the father nor the driver of the truck was injured.
All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts, obviously
limiting injury.
The driver of the truck was cited as contributing to the
collision.
A Trooper on the scene congratulated the father for keeping control of
the Saturn and preventing it from rolling over, which would have made
to severity of the crash mush worse. The speed limit at the
intersection is 50 mph.
