Merriwether Man Arrested in Alleged Rape of 16-year-old
web posted February 12, 2013
MERRIWETHER – Four years after
the
incident, a North Augusta woman came forward to report being raped
after going to a classmate's house following the last day of school at
Fox Creek Charter High School in 2008. The accused rapist was a Senior
and was about to graduate, she was a rising Junior. Cason Monroe Smith
ll, now 22, was arrested on Wednesday of last week following a 6-month
investigation. Smith was 18 at the time of the alleged crime.
According to information released on Monday, the victim stated she went
to the home of Smith along with another friend. Shortly after being
there she was offered a mixed drink of orange juice and Malibu Rum.
After consuming the drink she, "could hardly stand up", and saw Smith
and the other friend go upstairs. The woman claimed she then passed out.
When she awoke she was in a room in the house she had never been in and
Smith was on top of her. Her clothing had been removed and Smith had
sex with her. She told the investigator she fell back to sleep and did
not wake until the next morning. The woman stated she never reported
the incident and tried to "block out the incident from her mind," a
report states.
She states that she has had to undergo extensive therapy as a result of
the attack.
The initial report was filed in August of 2012 and turned over to the
Edgefield County Sheriff's Criminal Investigative
Division.
Smith has been charged with criminal sexual conduct in the third degree
and receiving stolen goods from an unrelated case of him being found
with a stolen truck in his possession.
Smith has been released on a total of $30,000 in surety bonds. No trial
date was available. He will be required to appear in General Sessions
Court in April for "First Appearance".
