Seatbelt saves life of teen

web posted February 13, 2009
MERRIWETHER – You hear it all the time on commercials, “Seatbelts save lives,” but that became a reality for a Merriwether teen Thursday afternoon. The 16-year-old girl was driving a Honda Accord eastbound on the 300 block of Murrah Road when she ran off the edge of the pavement and lost control, flipping the car several times and landing on its roof. Though shaken and scared, the girl was uninjured.

The wreckage from the crash was strewn over a fifty yard path with different parts marking each time the car flipped or rolled. The front bumper was found laying ten yards beyond the car.

Fortunately the car missed hitting several large trees that lined the edge of the roadway or the outcome could have been much worse rescuers said. Though the car suffered extensive damage it “held together pretty well” one officer said, which protected the teen in the driver’s compartment.

Had the teen not been restrained she would have most likely been ejected during the crash and would have suffered serious injury or death.

Edgefield County EMS, Merriwether First Responders, Deputies, and the Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
