Merriwether woman identified as Good Samaritan

web posted February 20, 2007

MERRIWETHER – As EdgefieldDaily.com reported last week on a lost and then recovered moneybag that contained a school’s bank deposit, we are able to identify the good citizen as Shenna Williams of Merriwether. Ms. Williams attended Merriwether Middle School before graduating from Strom Thurmond in 1999. She now is Physical Therapist in Aiken and a graduate of USC-Aiken.

Ms. Williams said she found the bag on her way home, “At first I didn’t stop,” she said, “but I turned around when I saw what it was.” She said she recognized it was a locked bank bag and took it to her home, which is just a little over a mile from the school, and “cut it open to see what was inside.” That is when she discovered it was a deposit from Merriwether Middle School. She returned it the next day.

Merriwether Middle School Principle Gayle Holmes said she and other school officials were “very happy” when the deposit was returned. Holmes said according to the accounting every penny of the deposit was returned. Reached on Monday Mrs. Holmes said the school was still planning to do something for Ms. Williams to reward her honesty. “We’re thinking of something along the lines of a gift certificate,” Mrs. Holmes said adding that no school funds would be used in providing whatever the school officials deem appropriate, “it’s all personal money.”

Ms. Williams, who said she loves her work as a Physical Therapist, helps restore the belief that honest people still exist in a world where war, crime, and destruction lead the nightly news. “There’s still some of us out here,” Ms. Williams joked. Indeed there are and Merriwether is lucky to have one as a resident of the community.

We also recognize Ms. Williams, who said she reads EdgefieldDaily.com, for her honesty and integrity and will be contributing to the reward, of sorts, being planned by Merriwether Middle School Principle Holmes.
