Merriwether Middle School Teacher of the Month

web posted February 21, 2014

MERRIWETHER – Merriwether Middle School is excited to announce their teacher of the month award. Each month one of MMS’ outstanding teachers will be highlighted throughout the community and will be nominated for the teacher of the year award.  These outstanding teachers are nominated by the administration.
For the first semester Holly Pace, Karen Tura, David Hamilton and Travis Spears were recognized as the MMS teachers of the month. In the coming months more teachers will receive this honor, and at the end of the year one of these teachers will be selected “teacher of the year” by the teacher of the year committee. The MMS teacher of the year will then compete against teachers throughout the district for the Edgefield County teacher of the year.
Holly Pace is in her second year as the physical education teacher at MMS.  In her short time at MMS she has proven herself as an excellent educator in and out of the classroom.  Not only does she excel in the classroom but she is the head volleyball coach, the girls’ basketball coach and she will lead the boys’ soccer team in its inaugural season this year.
Ms. Tura is a veteran teacher but is new to MMS this year. She has already made an impact on the faculty and staff at the school. She teaches seventh grade math and took over as the coach for the Mock Trial Team at MMS. She led the team to the regional competition in Greenville, SC where the team had an impressive showing.
Mr. David Hamilton has been a fixture at MMS for nearly a decade. In his time at MMS he has exceled in his math classroom. Mr. Hamilton serves as the faculty advisor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and can be found behind the grill serving up great food during MMS home football games.
Mr. Travis Spears had been teaching South Carolina History at MMS for seven years.  Mr. Spears serves as score keeper for the MMS football and basketball teams and is the schools head golf coach, he also serves on the School Improvement Council and the Leadership Committee.
This is the first year at MMS has had teachers of the month. In the past a teacher of the year candidates were nominated anonymously by one of their colleagues. This new award honors MMS’ most outstanding teachers throughout the year and will give the teacher of the year selection committee more choices when voting for one of the schools most prestigious awards.
