MERRIWETHER – Shortly after 7:00 pm the Merriwether Fire Department, First Responders, EMS, and Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the scene of a two-car collision at the intersection of Mealing Road and Sweetwater Road. When police and rescue personnel arrived, one of the cars was instantly familiar, the Red Geo Metro driven by the late Marion Key.

According to information provided at the scene, Mrs. Melba Key had just left from visiting a home off Stephens Road and was heading to work. When she prepared to turn onto Mealing Road from Sweetwater Road she was struck from behind by a Dodge Caravan  traveling north on Sweetwater. The collision sent the Metro sliding forward some twenty yards before coming to a stop.

Mrs. Key and the two occupants of the minivan, a brother and sister, were all immobilized and taken to MCG for evaluation. Their conditions are not known but their injuries were not life-threatening.

The collision stopped all traffic on Sweetwater Road for almost an hour before one lane was cleared once emergency vehicles could be moved. The entire roadway was not cleared until almost an hour later.
