Merriwether Middle School Student Hopes to Make Splash at Swim Meet

web posted February 22, 2014

MERRIWETHER Zak Griffin is a 6th grader at Merriwether Middle School and this weekend he will compete in the invitation only Georgia State 14 and under Championships held at the same pool that hosted the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Zak, who is a member of the Augusta Swim League, has qualified for this prestigious event twice in the past which an impressive accomplishment for the twelve year-old swimmer.

He will compete in five events at the Championships, the 50, 100, and 200 meter breast stroke as well as the 50 and 100 meter free style. In the past his best finishes have been 5th, 6th and 10th places but he looks to improve on those finishes this year. Zak not only excels in the pool but made the all A Honor roll on his last report card.

I am excited to swim in this meet at the site of the Olympics, he said. Zak will have a cheering section that will include his parents and his little brother who at only 8 years old is already a member of the ASL team.
