Local Chess Champ Encourages Competition with Donation
web
posted February 26, 2009
MERRIWETHER – Using
some of the money that
was given her by the South Carolina Chess Association for expenses
incurred in representing the state at the Susan Polgar National
Invitational for Girls Chess tournament in Lubbock, Texas, Hannah
“Tori” Whatley has decided to help a few local schools start chess
programs. The 13-year-old Merriwether Middle school student wants to
donate three chess sets to each of five schools that are within a ten
mile drive of her own school in hopes of fostering chess competitions
and new friendships.
These schools are Mossy Creek Elementary, Hammond Hills Elementary,
North Augusta Elementary, Paul Knox Middle School, and North Augusta
Middle School. She adds that even if your school wasn’t listed
above, you can still get free sets and start a club at your school by
visiting the state’s
scholastic wiki page. On the right-hand side of the page,
you’ll find, “Resources For School and Chess Club Organizers”.
Clicking on that link will put you on the road to having a chess club
at your school.
Tori has been featured in a number of local articles since winning the
opportunity to represent the state by being the highest-finishing
female in the South Carolina Scholastic Chess Championships in March of
this year.
In a warm-up event in April, she flew to Dallas, Texas to participate
in the 5th
Annual All-Girl Nationals where she was fortunate enough to have
the opportunity to play the U.S. Women’s Champion, International Master
Irina Krush, in an exhibition match. In July, she flew to Lubbock,
Texas to face the female state champions from all over the
country. In a field of mostly high school girls, Tori scored in
three of her six matches, pulling herself from 51st to 38th in the
competition.
She was mentioned in the U. S. Chess Federation’s October edition of
“Chess Life” magazine in their article about the event.
