Sweetwater Road blocked as high winds topple trees in the area
web
posted February 27, 2008
MERRIWETHER – As the
rain cleared, the
cold front began moving into the area and the winds began to blow and
the trees began to fall. A large pine tree was reported down and
completely blocking Sweetwater Road near the entrance to Mt. Vintage
just before 6 pm Tuesday. The towering pine took down power lines and
crashed through two fences. Sheriff’s Deputies and the Merriwether Fire
Department arrived on the scene and turned traffic back on both sides
of the tree.
Workers from Aiken Electric Co-op cut power to the downed lines and
began cutting the tree while waiting on the SC Department of
Transportation to arrive and remove the debris. The roadway was closed
for two hours as repairs were made.
However, that was
not the last of the problems for power crews. Shortly
after the report of the tree down on Sweetwater Road a report of power
being out in the Currtytown Station and Whispering Woods area came in
along with sporadic reports of power out on sections of Martintown
Road. Power crews were in the area searching for trees down in the area.
The rain soaked ground combined with high winds is always a recipe for
trees being toppled. Winds forecast for Wednesday could bring more
trouble as wind speed is expected to be 20 mph with gusts as high as 30
to 35 mph. Drivers would be advised to be attentive to swaying trees as
they travel.
