Woman Unable to Call 911 as Stranger Enters Carport

web posted February 27, 2013

MERRIWETHER – A Merriwether woman reported hearing a vehicle in the yard around 3 am early Monday morning and looked out the window to see a burgundy older model SUV with a utility trailer in tow stuck in the front yard. She did not have a phone to call 911 as she watched the man enter their carport on the 2700 block of Country Club Hills Drive.

The man reportedly walked into the carport and took a key to the family's 2006 Kawasaki Mule and put it in his pocket and also took a pair of black gloves before returning to his vehicle.

A short time later a blue Chevy S10 pickup arrived and pulled the SUV out of the yard and both vehicles left.

The man in the SUV was said to be a white male, possibly in his fifties, standing around 5' 11" tall with brown hair and weighing approximately 200 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a red shirt and boots.

The woman was unable to call to report the incident until her husband returned home from work around 8 am.

Edgefield County has seen a rash of ATV and Utility vehicles this month and it is believed the man was intending on stealing the family's UTV.

If you have any information on the incident or the identification of the suspect call the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office at 803-278-1625 or 803-637-5337. You do not need to give your name to provide information.

The owners were advised to move and secure the UTV in case the man returns. The case has been turned over to the Sheriff's Criminal Investigative Division for further investigation.
