Mt. Vintage home destroyed by fire after suspected lightning strike

web posted February 28, 2009 Updated: 4:10pm
MERRIWETHER – A devastating fire that is believed to have been touched off by lighting destroyed a home on Tillman Court in Mt. Vintage Saturday morning. The Merriwether Fire Department received the call after a neighbor saw smoke coming from the home around 11:20 am. As the first fire crews arrived on the scene they requested mutual aid from Edgefield and Belvedere Fire Departments to battle the fire in the two story home.

The heavy smoke at times would completely envelope the cul-de-sac, firefighters, and fire trucks, as crews worked to try to salvage the home. A battle that would later prove to be futile as the flames broke through the roofline and consumed the entire home.

As the battle to fight the fire drug on for over two hours additional manpower was requested from the County Line Fire Department, who arrived on the scene just after 1 pm. Some of the brick exterior began to crumble from the intense heat making conditions very dangerous for fire crews.

The fire was brought under control just after 2 pm and firefighters then began the daunting task of soaking the remaining structure. Fire crews were on the scene until after 4 pm.

The homeowners were in Atlanta at the time of the fire. A family cat was rescued by a neighbor shortly after the fire started, a Mt. Vintage Security Officer said.

The couple arrived back from Atlanta just before 3 pm and met with fire officials on the scene. They were also greeted by neighbors and members of the community opening their homes to the couple and offering aid.

This was said to be the first major fire in the Mt. Vintage community.
