Local Teen Plays Part In Historic Chess Match

HILTON HEAD – Perhaps, it was the magic touch of the ceremonial first move in Game 1 by Tori Whatley of Merriwether, which helped propel chess Grandmaster Gregory Kaidanov to victory in Round 1 against the most powerful female chess player in history, Hungarian Grandmaster Judit Polgar, as the two squared off in a Sicilian-theme match on Hilton Head Island.

The match, hosted by Jeff Smith, a business consultant the week of February 22nd, and ardent supporter of chess, was held in the presidential suite at the Hilton Head Marriott Spa and Resort with only seven guests invited to physically view the games as they took place.  Thousands, worldwide, followed the tournament as it was broadcast live on the internet.

The white pieces won each of the four classical games.  The round 1 Sveshnikov went to Kaidanov while the Dragon in round 2, went to Polgar.  Greg prevailed in the round 3 Najdorf , with the final game, a Scheveningen, going into Judit’s win column.

Tori’s father, Merriwether Mavericks Coach David Whatley, handled the time controls for the four games of the main event.  After the 2 -2 tie, Tori managed the time controls for the two blitz playoff games and the final, Armageddon game, in which, Judit ultimately won the tournament.

“Tori and I are so grateful to Mr. Smith for allowing us to participate in this world-class matchup.  The games were entertaining, instructional, and inspiring”, said Mr. Whatley.

In the intimate setting, both players were very accessible.  They signed autographs, posed for pictures, and had dinner with the guests.  They even took the time to play a few casual games with those on hand.  Tori played Grandmaster Kaidanov in one such game.  When asked how it went, Tori replied, “That was the most fun I’ve ever had losing!”

Just prior to round 4, Judit’s older sister, Grandmaster Susan Polgar, joined the company of guests.  “Tori and Susan get along very well, and they had a pleasant visit”, said Mr. Whatley, “It was very nice that Mr. Smith was able to arrange that”.  Tori and her father, David, were befriended by Mr. Smith two years ago when the young chess standout earned the privilege of representing the state in the Susan Polgar National Invitational tournament which was held in Lubbock, Texas.

Before departing the island, the gracious host presented Tori with several gifts.  Among them was the game clock used in rounds 1 and 4.  These mementos will be available for viewing at the Merriwether Mavericks Chess Club meeting on Monday, March 1st, at the middle school library, from 5 – 6 PM.  All are welcomed.
