Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Suspected Burglar

web posted March 7, 2013

MERRIWETHER – A Graniteville man arrested following a traffic stop Tuesday appears to have been wanted on an outstanding burglary charge, according to court records. An Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy on patrol spotted a red Chevy pick-up truck with no tag light on Highway 25 south around 1:41 am and initiated a traffic stop at Earls Court. The two-hour traffic stop ended up with the driver being found with a gun and an investigator called to take over the investigation.

According to an incident report, the tag on the truck actually belonged on another vehicle. It was also determined that there was no insurance on the truck. When the deputy asked the driver, identified as 25-year-old Stephen Anthony Hicks, to step out and remove his coat so he could be searched prior to arrest, he tried to hide a .25 caliber pistol in his coat.

The truck also matched the description of a vehicle used in two separate burglaries recently, though they were not listed.

Hicks was arrested and booked into custody for use of a tag belonging to another vehicle, operating an uninsured vehicle, simple possession of drugs, and burglary in the first degree. The report did not indicate if the gun recovered was stolen or not.

He is currently being held on a total of $31,212 in bonds, according to online court records.

His 29-year-old female companion was not charged and was released on the scene.
