Edgefield County man first fatality in county

web posted March 8, 2008
MERRIWETHER – Edgefield County suffered its first traffic fatality early Saturday morning when a report of a van down an embankment came into 911 dispatchers at 4:36 am. Merriwether Firefighters, EMS, and Sheriff’s Deputies arrived a few minutes later to find the driver ejected from the Dodge van lying beneath the windshield about ten yards from the crash scene.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived a short time later and began investigating the crash.

According to information obtained from the scene, the Clarks Hill man was traveling west on Martintown Road when he left the westbound lane, overcorrected, and then left the eastbound lane near Deer Springs Road. The van then careened down the steep embankment striking several trees before overturning and coming to rest on the roof.

Local residents on the scene said the man and his girlfriend had been driving around the area all afternoon and that prompted a search for a possible second crash victim. Merriwether firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to aid in the search, however no other victim was found.

Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett pronounced the man dead on the scene and EMS workers transported the body to the Edgefield County morgue. His identity is being withheld pending the notification of family members.

Alcohol is considered a factor in the crash as the scene and the van was littered with empty and full beer cans.

The crash closed one lane of Martintown Road for almost two hours. The crash was still under investigation at 6:25 am. This is the first fatality in Edgefield County in 2008.
