Fire destroys building and tractor Saturday

web posted March 20, 2006

MERRIWETHER – Just after Noon on Saturday, a 911 call reported an outbuilding engulfed in flames. The Merriwether Fire Department arrived on the scene of the Samuels Lane home to find the building near collapse and a farm tractor in front of the building ablaze. A 500-gallon fuel tank was situated just behind the building, which firefighters cooled quickly, and about a quarter of an acre of the woods was burning. The smoke could be seen from Briggs Road.

The building collapsed and the tin roof made dousing the flames inside more difficult for about 20 minutes. With several tankers arriving on the scene, the fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes from the first units responding.

Firemen continued to empty each truck to fully extinguish the flames before leaving the scene around 3:00 pm. The building and the contents, including propane tanks, were a total loss. The John Deere tractor was also destroyed. No dollar amount of damage was given. The cause of the fire is unknown.

An earlier vehicle fire in Edgefield destroyed a car on Rosa Hill around 7:50 am Saturday. Edgefield Firemen extinguished the flames in short order. The cause of that fire was also not know at the time of our report.

Samuel Lane is located just a few miles west on Republican Road and to the left off Julia Road.
