Deputy Involved in Collision

web posted March 20, 2013

MERRIWETHER – A collision early Tuesday morning involved an Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputy on Sweetwater Road. According to Edgefield Sheriff's Capt. Chris Wash, the deputy was on patrol when he rounded a downhill curve and came upon a downed power pole blocking the roadway. The deputy avoided hitting the downed pole but did strike the downed lines.

As it turned out, the power pole was downed by another driver who lost control near the bottom of the hill and struck the pole, causing it to fall around 3 am. That driver was unhurt and was on the phone with 911 dispatchers when the deputy struck the downed lines.

"The deputy was not responding to a call at the time," Capt. Was said, adding that the road conditions were foggy and luckily the deputy was driving slowly due to the low visibility. "If he'd been responding to a call it could have been much worse."

The original crash knocked out power along Sweetwater Road for several hours and a portion of Sweetwater Road had to be closed until utility workers could replace the pole and reconnect the power lines. Phone crews were also on the scene most of the day Tuesday repairing lines.

Capt. Was said the damage to the patrol vehicle consisted of a dent in the hood, a side mirror and other dents. The deputy was not injured and returned to patrol in a spare patrol vehicle.
