Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess takes Second in State Competition web posted March 26, 2007 MERRIWETHER – It may have been a well-kept secret that Merriwether Elementary and Merriwether Middle School share a scholastic chess team, but that secret was exposed in a big way Saturday when the team competed in the 2007 S.C. Scholastic Chess Championships at Irmo High School in Columbia. Five elementary and two middle school members attended the event. Alex Thibodeau and Carlton Wren represented the team in the, always tough, middle school section. Despite having only learned to play 2 months ago, both turned in respectable performances. Coach David Whatley said, “Many players in the middle school section have been playing for 4 or 5 years”. In the elementary school section, Tori Whatley won the 1st place trophy for fifth grade, while Gregory Baucom won the 1st place trophy for third grade. Also in attendance were Kiersten Lee, Aaron Mathis, and Chris McCain, whose combined efforts led to the Merriwether Mavericks Scholastic Chess Club taking second place in the state for the elementary section. If you’d like more information about the chess program, the club meets on Mondays from 5 until 6 PM at the elementary school cafeteria. Coach David Whatley can be reached at 803-442-9060. For
