Five-Hour Stand-off Ends in Arrest: Stolen Guns Recovered

web posted March 27, 2014

MERRIWETHER An Edgefield County Sheriff's Investigator looking into two recent burglaries in Merriwether located a suspect at a remote trailer off Woodlawn Road Tuesday night. After extended talks with the suspect yielded no results, the suspect entered the home and refused to come out or let deputies in, in spite of pleas from the young man's father.

After refusing to cooperate, deputies surrounded the mobile home while the investigator went to obtain a search warrant for the home. Over five hours passed before deputies made entry into the home around 1 am Wednesday taking the occupant, 20-year-old Jeffrey R. Britt, into custody.

A search of the home recovered at least eight stolen firearms. Sheriff's Chief Investigator Randy Doran said the guns seized were confirmed as coming from the recent burglaries nearby - one on Woodlawn Road Sunday and the second on Monday on Martintown Road. Several other items were also seized, however; he did not elaborate on what they were.

None of the stolen cash was found in the search.

Britt was booked on one count each of burglary in the first degree and grand larceny. No bond hearing has been held at this time and additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.
A second suspect is expected to turn himself in later this week in connection to the burglaries. He was wearing an ankle tracking device while on probation that tracked him to the scene of the most recent burglary and then directly to the location of the stand-off.

He is not being named until formal charges have been filed and he has been charged as an adult.
