Handicapped Merriwether Man Found Beaten, Unresponsive in Own Home

web posted March 31, 2014

MERRIWETHER A handicapped Currytown Road man was found bloodied, unconscious and unresponsive lying face-down in a pool of blood Sunday morning by a woman arriving to take him to church. The woman arrived and knocked on the door but got no response and entered the home and saw blood in a number of rooms before finding the man and rushed to his aid and called 911.

Edgefield County EMS and Sheriff's Deputies arrived minutes later and rushed the man to the Trauma Center in Augusta where he underwent surgery, sources said. Sheriff's Investigators, including the Crime Scene Unit, were called to the home and the entire location was roped off as a crime scene.

A knife was seized as evidence from inside the home, but it is unknown if it was used in the attack. Questions about stab wounds went unanswered, however, it was confirmed there was multiple trauma to the man's head.

The man's mother and sister were the last to see the man on Saturday. The mother dropped off groceries and spent some time with her son. Later in the day his sister arrived to run an errand for him and everything was fine when she left. Specific times of when they were at the home was not available.

He was found around 9 or 9:30 Sunday morning. Investigators would not say how long the man may have been laying on the floor or comment on his condition.

Deputies spoke with a number of people who had seen two women at the house earlier on Thursday or Friday in a tan car loading boxes. One is believed to be the man's estranged wife, who is said to have a restraining order against her due to the couple going through a nasty divorce.

Sheriff's Deputies are very familiar with the home and the couple and they have responded to numerous calls in the past involving the couple ranging from disturbances to assaults.

Investigators would not comment on the case citing the very early stages of the investigation, saying only the circumstances were "suspicious". There did not appear to be forced entry into the home and the front door was unlocked when his ride to church arrived.

According to information, investigators are looking into at least two possible suspects at this time.
