Early morning fire destroys North Augusta Country Club

web posted April 16, 2007

MERRIWETHER – An early morning fire left the North Augusta Country Club in ruins. The call of the fire came into dispatchers just after 5 am as a “full involved structure fire” sending North Augusta and Merriwether Firefighters to the scene. As firefighters began setting up the entire country club was engulfed in flames and explositions rocked the early morning calm.

It is unknown at this time how the fire started. A man that lives across the street said he went out at 4:30 am to let his dogs out and did not see anything. A few minutes later he said his dogs were “going nuts” and that is when he noticed the fire.

“It started on this end”, meaning the front section near the dining area, “and then the whole thing went up in flames”, he said.

Edgefield County Deputies and North Augusta Public Safety blocked traffic as additional fire departments began arriving including Belvedere FD. The Westside and County Line Fire Departments were also called to respond.

The blaze was still being battled at this writing and it is unknown how long it will take for the fire to be extinguished.
