Couple aids in recovery of stolen 4-wheeler

web posted May 1, 2007
MERRIWETHER – A Eureka couple out for some four wheeling in the Sumter National Forrest Sunday afternoon helped the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office recover an expected stolen four-wheeler. The couple was traversing their way to the river when they came across the partially dismantled Polaris and reported it to police. The couple met with the deputy and he followed them two miles into the forestry road and then another mile into the forest by Jeep to recover the four-wheeler.

Body parts, the engine cover, seat, and some mechanical items were stripped from the vehicle leaving the majority of the motor and all four wheels in tact. The four-wheeler was towed to the Sheriff’s impound lot for identification on Monday.

At this writing no information for the owner was available. Investigators were checking recent thefts and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) for other agencies that may have reported the vehicle missing.

The length of time the four-wheeler had been in the woods before being discovered was unknown.
