Driver Convicted of Possession 2 Weeks ago Arrested for Possession at Checkpoint

web posted May 9, 2014

MERRIWETHER A Warrenville man was arrested at a safety checkpoint Wednesday night after an Edgefield County Deputy noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the car when he asked the driver for his drivers license. The deputy asked if there was anything illegal in the car and the driver said no. He even granted permission for the car to be searched.

The driver, 29-year-old Tyrone Maurice Hayward, was asked to step out of the car and was searched for weapons in a pat-down. The deputy noticed a "bulge" in Hayward's left front pocket. When asked what it was Hayward was unable to tell the deputy, an incident report states.

The deputy opened the pocket and found a bag containing suspected marijuana and an unmarked pill bottle containing another bag with marijuana inside. Hayward was then placed under arrest for drug possession. True to his word, no drugs were found inside the car, just on his person.

Hayward is just two weeks removed from a conviction of simple possession of marijuana on April 23 where he was fined $620 upon conviction. He was charged with simple possession of marijuana second offense and booked into custody from the most recent arrest. The silver Cadillac he was driving was towed from the scene.

A court date was not available.
