Burglary suspect crashes truck and runs leading to manhunt

web posted May 25, 2010
MERRIWETHER – A three hour manhunt was underway Monday around noon after a Horns Creek West resident called to report a man burglarizing the home. The man reported entered the home through an unlocked door and then left and drove a blue Toyota pickup truck back the home and went back inside. The unknown man exited the home a second time and the resident ran and locked the door behind him, causing the man to flee. Fortunately the man was able to get the first three letters of the license plate before the truck sped off.

A citizen spotted the truck driving southbound on Sweetwater Road and began to follow while trying to make contact with the Sheriff’s Dispatch. A few miles down the road a Sheriff’s Deputy traveling northbound was seen and alerted to the suspect’s truck. The Deputy turned around and began to pursue the truck but the driver failed to stop for blue lights and turned onto Mealing Road.

As another deputy closed in the man tried to turn into a dirt drive that led into a clearing in the woods and lost control and crashed the truck. The man then jumped from the truck and fled on foot with both deputies giving chase. They lost sight of him as he entered the heavily wooded area.

Additional units were called to the scene and began setting up a perimeter and patrolling nearby roads. An investigator spotted the suspect walking on the pipeline clearing near Randal Road where he ducked back into the wood line. The Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team arrived and made two attempts to track the man but was unsuccessful in locating him.

During the manhunt area residents were called and notified of the situation and to be on the lookout for the suspect described only as a white male standing about 6 feet tall wearing blue jeans and a dark shirt. The man also has a thin beard.

The search was called off after about three hours in hopes the man would resurface and later in the evening the Sheriff’s Office began getting reports a man fitting the description  seen exiting the woods near Moore Road and the Merriwether Fire Station 2 trying to flag down passing cars around 7 pm.

Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the man.

The truck the man was driving was traced back to an owner on Lanham Road. The owner stated he loaned the truck to a worker that has been helping him build a new home in the Horns Creek Road area. The man supposedly wanted to use the truck to “find a job”.

Inside the truck were tools often used to break into a home including a large screwdriver and a pry bar.

Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said they have identified the suspect but wanted to wait until arrest warrants were issued before releasing that information.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office at 806-637-5337 or 803-278-1625.

Edgefield Daily will continue to follow the case and will have more information on the suspect when it becomes available.
