accidental death
web
posted May 27, 2009
MERRIWETHER – A Graniteville woman was
killed when she was struck by a Ford Explorer driven by a Trenton man
Friday night. Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said Tuesday that
51-year-old Cathy Barnes was struck in the northbound lanes of Highway
25 near the Sweetwater Road intersection around 11:30 pm and was
pronounced dead on the scene.
“The circumstances surrounding her death
are currently under investigation by the Aiken County Coroner's Office
and the South Carolina Highway Patrol,” Mr. Carlton said.
Ms. Barnes was struck by a late model Ford Explorer driven by John
Whisnant of Trenton who was traveling north on Highway 25. Mr. Whisnant
will not be charged in this crash and was not at fault. Ms.Barnes may
have been intoxicated at the time,
toxicology results are pending.
Completion of the investigation on Tuesday, along with autopsy
findings, revealed
that this death will be ruled as accidental. The cause of death was
said to be multiple body trauma.
This is the 12th fatal crash in Aiken County in 2009.
