One man injured, another jailed in early morning crash

web posted May 30, 2009
MERRIWETHER – A near head-on collision on Woodlawn Road Friday morning sent one man to MCG and a second man to jail. Merriwether Fire Fighters, EMS, and Sheriff’s Deputies were alerted to the crash around 9 am and arrived to find the road partially blocked in a blind curve and one man bleeding from a head wound. The debris from the two trucks littered the crash scene.

According to the driver of the Chevrolet 4x4 full sized pickup truck, he was rounding the curve near Acorn Knoll, “going way too fast,” and drifted into the oncoming lane. The man said the early morning glare from the rising sun prevented him from seeing the oncoming truck until it was too late. “I tried to swerve,” he said. The driver of a westbound Chevrolet S-10 pick up slammed into the side the of the eastbound truck, which came to an abrupt stop in the eastbound lane.

Skid marks showed the eastbound truck was completely over the oncoming lane and even crossing over onto the shoulder of the oncoming lane prior to the collision and showed where the Chevy truck began sliding sideways just prior to impact.

According to the Edgefield County Detention Center the Highway Patrol arrested Gregory Parrott, 35, the driver of the Chevy 4x4 for DUI. He was still being held at the Detention center Friday night.

The driver of the S-10 was immobilized and transported to MCG with a deep cut to the left side of his head. His condition was unavailable but his injuries were not considered serious.

The scene was cleared in a little over an hour and traffic was restored to normal.
