Three sent to MCG in afternoon collision

web posted June 11, 2009
MERRIWETHER – An afternoon collision sent three men to the MCG Trauma Center in Augusta and closed all traffic on Sweetwater Road shortly before 5 pm. Merriwether First Responders, Firefighters, Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputies, EMS, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol all responded to the scene to find the three men in two SUV’s complaining of back and neck pain and possible broken bones.

According information available on the scene, the driver of a Ford Expedition was pulling out of a driveway of 541 Sweetwater Road when it was struck by a northbound Isuzu Rodeo. The Expedition was knocked off the roadway and into a ditch beside the driveway. The Isuzu spun around and was found facing southbound in the northbound lane.
The passenger in the Isuzu was complaining of chest pains and difficulty breathing. When EMS arrived they called for a helicopter and firemen began looking for a landing zone. After being advised of the arrival time of the helicopter EMS crews cancelled the call and transported the passenger and driver by ambulance.

A second ambulance arrived minutes later and transported the driver of the Expedition to MCG as well. He was complaining of back, neck and leg pain.

The fiancé of the driver of the Expedition stated she had just been dropped off at the home and was walking towards the house when she heard the crash. “I turned around and he (her fiancé) was spinning around and the other car was spinning in the road.” She then called 911 to report the collision.

Though none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening, a reconstruction team of the Highway Patrol was called and the vehicles’ locations were marked by painting the location of the tires before they were removed from the scene.

All photos of the scene taken by EdgefieldDaily.com prior to the arrival of the Highway Patrol were asked to be supplied to the investigating Trooper.

According to a friend of the driver of the Expedition who responded to the scene, all three of the injured men were friends. Both vehicles suffered major damage and were considered to be a total loss.
